EXCLUSIVE!!!  JRBL's 1st Teacher FAMiliarization Tour

This summer teachers from Clark Springs Elementary School attended James River Bus Line’s first Teacher FAMilarization tour.  James River Bus Lines partnered with the city of Newport News to showcase their destination as a top choice for field trips.

We began the day at the Virginia Living Museum, where we got to explore the new building that opened in March 2004.  Living exhibits showcase Virginia’s natural history from the mountains to the sea.  Teachers were able to experience the museum as their students will – exploring hands-on activities, walk the ¾-mile boardwalk where animals could be seen in natural habitats.

Next, we moved on to the Mariner’s Museum, where, again, teachers were introduced to the hands-on activities and exhibits focusing on over 3,000 years of maritime history and seafaring adventures.

From there, we visited the Virginia War Museum.  This museum of American military history provided teachers with a glimpse of their “A Soldier’s Heritage” program.  The program provides not only an overview of the events and atmospheres surrounding wars, but the evolution and living conditions of the American soldier.  The program interacts with the students with artifacts including uniforms and equipment, giving students the chance to ascertain a better understanding.

Our final stop was the Newsome House & Cultural Center.  This African-American historical landmark introduced teachers to the history of Dr. & Mrs. Newsome, who shaped the history of the city of Newport News by increasing awareness and understanding of black heritage and culture.  This attraction partners well with the James Fields House, historically significant for its long asasociation with the development of social and civic life of the African-American community in Newport News.

Teachers were only given a glimpse of these attractions and what they had to offer.  All of the museums and attractions that we visited on this FAM tour have programs that are designed to enhance and supplement classroom learning and to meet the Virginia SOLs and National Standards of Learning.  Call Emily, in James River Bus Lines’ Tour Department today to book your class field trip!
